Support My Ride to Conquer Cancer?

Welcome to my Personal Page! The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, is a cycling journey throughout Victoria's scenic countryside that I'm embarking on to fight cancer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!

I'm setting off on this journey with a little apprehension, but a lot of excitement - I'm no cyclist.  My cycling experience to date includes my spasmodic commitment to riding the 7km to work occasionally. I realize I've got a lot of work to do, but I think I can make it.  

My commitment to this ride goes beyond the romantic idea of a ride in the country.  

I have my own personal experience with cancer.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age 33 in December 2001.  More than 10 years on from that date, I can still remember the fear and turmoil and how important it was to have the right team to support my journey.  This of course included my family and friends, but importantly a supportive and expert medical team.  

I was not treated at Peter Mac, but a lot of my friends were. In the years after my experience, I've been involved in peer support for young women affected by breast cancer and have always felt assured that those being treated at Peter Mac were being looked after by the best.  

It's not just about what they do for cancer patients today, it's the world best practice they are developing as they work towards a cure, prevention and care for patients, which requires our support.

In December 2001 I wasn't making plans for 10 years in the future -  I wasn't even sure I was going to see one more year.  Yet, thanks to the wonders of modern medicine and the support of my friends and family, here I am. I'm one of the lucky ones who has had the opportunity to continue a full and productive life.  I now have the privilege to contribute to increasing the chances of there being more people like me.
